How this calculator works

Most beginners add a markup to their costs and call it a price. That ignores a critical fact: marketplace and payment fees are charged as a percentage of your selling price, so they grow as your price grows. This calculator reverse-solves the correct price instead.

The formula it uses is: Selling Price = Fixed Costs ÷ (1 − Fee % − Target Margin). The denominator shrinks as fees and your target margin rise, which is why high-fee marketplaces require meaningfully higher prices to hit the same margin.

Break-even vs. target margin

Your break-even selling price is the lowest price that covers all costs and fees with zero profit. Anything below it loses money. Your recommended selling price is the break-even price plus enough room to hit your target margin.

Choosing a target margin

There is no universal “correct” profit margin. Appropriate margins vary by product type, competition, sales channel, fees and business model. Use the scenario table to compare different target margins and see how each one changes your required selling price.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my recommended price higher than cost + margin?

Because percentage fees (platform, payment, affiliate) are taken from your selling price. Adding a margin to cost alone ignores that those fees also scale up with your price, so the true price must be higher to preserve the margin.

What is a good profit margin?

There isn't one margin that works for every product. Your target depends on your costs, marketplace fees, competition, sales volume and business model. Compare several margins using the scenario table to see what produces a realistic selling price for your product.
